Internet Marketing: 10 Deadly Sins of a Poorly Designed Website

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Face it. There are tons of websites out there but very few that actually pull their weight and get results. Effective website design is not easy. If it was, every business that put up a website would realize enormous success. It takes many different skill sets to pull together a killer website.

That being said, here is a list of website design sins for your edification. Consider these deeply and I highly recommend you make sure your website doesn’t commit them.

Website Sin # 1 - Website does not have a crystal clear objective. Why do you have or want to have a website in the first place? What do you want it to do for your business?

Website Sin #2 - No clear call to action. This sin dovetails on the previous one. Once you are clear on your website’s objective, make it real clear to your visitor what action you want them to take. Clearly spell it out. Trust me, leave no room for interpretation.

Website Sin #3 - Website does not have a means to capture visitor’s contact information. You are missing a tremendous opportunity to gather prospects who are clearly interested in what you have to offer - hence qualified prospects to market to going forward. Do whatever it takes here. Offer what we call an “ethical bribe” in exchange for their contact information.

Website Sin #4 - Website doesn’t give visitors a reason to come back. Unless your website is a one-time sales website, you must keep it chock full of new and great content to keep it producing for you.

Website Sin #5 - Website has no substance, all style. Dovetailing on the previous sin, focus should be more on adding valuable content as opposed to having flashy animations. Flashy animations may wow your visitors once (if you’re lucky), but great content starts building a relationship or dare I say a dependency on you. Bottom line you’re adding value to your prospects.

Website Sin #6 - Website has an “it’s all about me” mentality. Keep the copy conversational in tone and focus clearly on what’s in it for your visitor. Make them feel that it’s all about them - make them feel special.

Website Sin #7 - Website is inconsistent with your “Brand”. Your website does not have to be the best looking site out there. It is far more critical to be consistent (same overall look, feel and design as your other marketing materials).

These next three sins are absolutely inexcusable and should not require much explanation. Nothing will frustrate your visitor more and detract from your credibility faster.

Website Sin #8 - Poor or inconsistent navigation. Don’t make people think. Make it real easy for visitors to find what they are looking for.

Website Sin #9 - Dead links. This is a credibility killer. Always do what you say you’re going to do. It is amazing what people can read into a dead link - the worst being that you simply don’t care enough about you visitor.

Website Sin #10 - Slow website. I know, it’s hard to believe but not everyone is using high speed broadband Internet connections yet. A little compassion here goes a long way.

How To Install A Wall Mounted LCD TV

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Once you have your LCD TV home, you now have to concern yourself with how to install a wall mounted LCD TV. Wall mounting, because of the space saving factor of it and the way it prevents your television from dominating the room, is a very popular way of displaying it.

One way to get it installed is to use a professional. Obviously, someone from the store or an electronics store is going to be able to install the TV efficiently and correctly. However, that will cost you a great deal of money, and since you just spent all that money on an LCD TV, it may be a good idea to install it yourself. It is not that hard, so you may as take advantage.

First Things First

Once you have an idea of where you would like to mount your LCD TV, you need to get a stud finder. How to install a wall mounted LCD TV doesn’t matter if you don’t put it in the right place. User your stud finder to make sure the wall mount is put into a stud. This is the only way you will be able to make the television safely stable on your wall.

Anchors Away

Once you find the studs and have marked the mounting location, you are ready to put up the wall mount. The wall mount will need to be screwed into the wall at as many points as possible. The more points of anchor, the less weight is on each individual mounting spot. Once you have the wall mount anchored to the studs in the wall, you are almost done with how to install a wall mounted LCD TV.

Hide Cables

Once you have the studs located, the wall mount anchored, and the LCD TV attached to the mount, you need to plug in and hook up your television. You will need to find a way to hide the lines. That can be done either by drilling into your wall and running them through it, or by finding other methods of “hiding” them on the outside of the wall. Certain conduits and sheathes available in your local home improvement store can really help with this process.

Have Help

Finally, no matter how sure you are that you know how to install a wall mounted LCD TV, it is still a good idea to have help around. Whether it is to hold up the TV as it is mounted or to bounce ideas and suggestions off of, having a second person there will make the process safer and more efficient.

Learning how to install a wall mounted LCD TV is the last step in the long process of getting your perfect television. You did the research on the types of technology, found the place to buy, found the model you wanted, and installed it in your wall. Now, all that is left to do is sit back and enjoy your new LCD television on its newly installed wall mount.

American Pit Bull Terrier: Is It The Right Dog Breed For You?

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

If you’re thinking about owning a Pit Bull terrier, it is important to understand the characteristics of the breed as well as your current lifestyle. Caring for a Pit Bull is a long-term commitment that needs to be taken seriously, not just a simple hobby that you participate in when time permits.

Unfortunately it is very difficult for many dogs to find a second home in the event that their owners “change their minds” and decide they don’t want a dog after all. The situation is even worse for Pit Bulls due to their reputation in today’s society.

Do you have the time and the energy to commit to a high energy breed such as a Pit Bull? Pit Bull terriers have very high exercise requirements and are happiest when they get plenty of play time.

If you are interested in owning a Pit Bull, you should possess a similar sense of adventure. A day at the beach, a park, or just playing frisbee in the backyard are all excellent things to do with your four-legged friend. These activities will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog and make ownership even more rewarding.

If you’re more of an inside person however and don’t enjoy exercising daily, you should seriously rethink your idea of Pit Bull ownership. There are many other excellent dog breeds that will probably be more suitable to your lifestyle and it isn’t fair to penalize your dog simply because you are too selfish to get an alternative breed.

If you still are set on owning a Pit Bull, it is important that you begin training your dog as soon as you bring him home. Pit Bulls who aren’t properly trained can become more than a handful. On the other hand, a well-trained Pit can regularly impress others with good behavior.

Personal Excellence: What’s Your Motivation? (Part 1 of 3)

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I was in the gym, pushing my adolescent muscles to their limit. The other dudes where there too, getting their various degrees of “pump” on. And there he was, the one we called “Pec Man” This cat looked like all he did in life was work his chest. His twin peaks of manhood bulged and glistened before us as he paused every 5 seconds to admire his life’s work. Awe and envy filled the space whenever we beheld his mountainous presence.

One day a fit, but flat middle aged man approached PM and asked him what seemed like a straightforward-and immensely valuable-question, “How did you get your pecs so large?”

The weight room became eerily silent. Pimply teens and sagging mid-lifers alike leaned in to drink the elixir of this magnificent man’s experience and advice. Soon, we too would have straining mounds of machismo under our tightly fitting, but tastefully demure shirts. Our bosses and girlfriends will approve. Our enemies will shrink. We will join the pantheon of the mighty. We would be legends.

“I work,” he quipped. Stunned by the simplicity of the answer, we all let out a collective nervous chuckle. Of course he worked. We all did. We knew there was more to it than that, so, we drew in our breaths for the big answer,

Our hero, Mr. Mid-Life asked again, “Of course sir, you work, and quite effectively I see.” “I was wondering though, about what exercises you did in your work. What’s your secret?”

Again, the air fairly thickened while we anticipated more muscle manna from this Olympian god. We would know what he knows. Soon, they would see our might and know we were men!

“I work hard,” was his final answer as he returned to his incredibly intimidating lifting routine.

The first thought I had was one that remained with me for several years. “Jerk.” “What a cop out.” “That’s no answer.” “Everybody knows that hard work gets it done.” At sixteen, I’d already become conditioned to the idea that there is a magic pill or instant elixir that makes it all good in our lives. The truth is, if Pec Man had gone into vivid detail about his chest routine most of us would have been just as disappointed. That’s because essentially all accomplishment requires what we like to derisively call “hard work”. Few it seems, understand that fact. Fewer, still, want to hear it. Quite rare in modern western society are those who’ll embrace that fact.

Another part of me though, has come to realize that the Devil is indeed in the details. How we do a thing is as important as how hard we do it. Running north from Miami as hard as you can will never get you to Tokyo. So then, the answer to “getting it done” lies in the simple combination of doing the right work and doing it the right way. But why do it anyway? Why have massive muscles or a better job? Why try to understand others, or raise balanced children? The final key to getting it done is the reason you want to do it in the first place.

Aquamarine Gemstones

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

March’s birthstone and the traditional stone for a nineteenth wedding anniversary, Aquamarine is the greenish-blue to blue-green variety of the mineral beryl (which includes emerald and the pink variety called morganite). The name comes from the Latin for “sea water.”

People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine magically conveyed insight and foresight. Holding one in the mouth allowed a person to call up spirits to answer life’s most vexing questions. Water that an aquamarine had soaked in was prescribed for eye troubles, respiratory diseases, and hiccups.

Many huge aquamarines have been found. One well-formed crystal found in Brazil in 1920 weighed 243 pounds. It was 19 by 16 inches, greenish on the outside, blue on the inside, and so transparent that objects were clearly visible through its length.

The British Museum of Natural History has a flawless aquamarine of 879 carats, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History has a fine 638-carat stone. In 1935, the Brazilian government gave Eleanor Roosevelt a 1,847-carat aquamarine. It is now in the museum at Hyde Park, the Roosevelt’s New York estate.

Aquamarine gemstones are a beautiful, cool gem in the greenish-blue hue range in light to medium dark tones. Aquamarine gemstones are available to you a choice of two qualities of faceted aquamarines. In both qualities the gemstones are eye clean with good cuts. AA quality consists of light to medium tone stones and our AAA quality has a medium to medium dark tone.

Maternity Wear - Do I Really Need It?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Maternity clothing is manufactured to cater for your expanding bust, hips and waist that naturally occurs during pregnancy. Obviously it also caters for your bump that will be sitting out in front before you know it.

Many women wonder if they really need to purchase maternity clothing at all, the answer is pretty simple. If you want to look good and stay comfortable, Yes.

If you do decide that you do-not want maternity clothing you will find pants, shirts and shorts are the hardest garments to get away with this in. Normal clothing just does not allow for a belly to poke out the way your bump will!

There is an item called a belly belt that can be very useful and some mothers manage with these for a majority of their pregnancy. It consists of various size elastic strips that have a button at one end, and a button hole at the other. It comes with different colour belly panels to insert depending on the colour of your outfit. The idea is to place the belt between your normal button and button hole allowing you to wear your normal clothes for longer into your pregnancy.

Pro- Great for the first few months. You can wear your own clothes for longer.

Con- Can only be used for clothes that have a button and zip at the front. Often as your pregnancy progresses you will still find that your normal pants, skirts or shorts end up tight in the legs and hips as these areas are the natural place for your body to store fat as it prepares for the birth of your baby. Maternity clothing is designed with this in mind.

Maternity clothing is designed to be more flattering these days then what it once was. These days most women are extremely excited about their pregnancy and want to show their ‘bumps’ to the world. You will achieve this better and remain more comfortable throughout your pregnancy by carefully selecting a few quality maternity wear garments. As most tend to do with their normal wardrobes you will have your favourite outfits that you wear constantly so you will want garments that wash and wear well. There are two main things to consider prior to making your new wardrobe purchases:

How much wear will I get out of this item?

Consider the style and think about what stages of your pregnancy you will be able to wear it. Look for garments that will look good and feel comfortable regardless of if you are 3 months pregnant or 9 months. Many are also suitable post pregnancy while you are working on getting your shape back, these are a great choice.

How comfortable will this be on my stomach?

If this is your first pregnancy it maybe a little hard to imagine what you will feel like at 8 months pregnant, but roughly it is like someone has placed a basketball inside your belly. It isn’t very flexible, doesn’t like to bend to much and doesn’t like pressure on it. So the last thing you want is something that cuts across your belly.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune on you maternity wardrobe. By carefully selecting some basic mix and match items you can keep your budget in check. Recommended must have basics would be one or two pairs of comfortable pants, a skirt - length dependant on personal preference, and depending on time of year a pair of shorts. For tops you often can get away with your own for longer then with your pants however eventually you will require more room. Although it maybe tempting to just buy larger sizes you will find they look too big around the shoulders and will be firm around the waist. Maternity tops generally are designed fuller in the bust area and have longer front hemlines to allow an even look as your bump expands, so a couple of Maternity tops and you have your wardrobe set.

Spirituality - Bhagavan Nityananda, the Great Siddha of India

Friday, August 15th, 2008

“Siddha” means the one with “siddhis,” or yogic powers. Bhagavan Nityananda was one such great Siddha.

Although I’ve never met him in person, I had the good fortune of meeting his equally great disciple Baba Muktananda in America and it’s through Baba that I got to know this truly fascinating mystic and master yogi.

There are three stories about the taciturn Nityananda that for some reason made a deep impression on me.

In the first story, Indian tax collectors approach Nityananda and start to harass him about his taxes.

Although well-known for roaming the countryside non-stop with just a loincloth to his name and having no material possessions whatsoever, Nityananda was still squeezed by the tax collectors for hiding his wealth. Perhaps enjoying their power over this shy yogi who hid his powers from the outside world, they bothered him with insistent demands to reveal where he was hiding his “treasure chest.”

Sick and tired of his tormentors, Nityananda at long last caved in and told the taxmen to follow him to a swap.

And when they reached the crocodile infested swamp, Niyananda dived straight into the water and disappeared from their sight.

And according to the legend, when the Nityananda surfaced again, he was holding in both of his fists brand new gold coins and precious jewels.

“Do you now understand where I’m hiding my treasure at?” Nityananda asked them. Throwing the gold coins and jewelry on their heads, Nityananda admonished the taxmen not to bother him again.

Shocked and horrified by what they have just witnessed, the government official disappeared in a hurry and never came back.

# # #

Another sweet story again involves the consequences of harassing Nityananda.

Bhagavan, never staying at any one spot for too long, used to travel a lot on trains crisscrossing the Indian continent. Since most of the conductors were familiar with the strange blessings that visited those who treated the famous yogi well, they did not bother him and allowed him to travel without a ticket.

But one day a diligent conductor who did not know Nityananda asked him either to produce a ticket or get off the train.

Nityananda obediently got off and just squatted next to the tracks.

But when it came to moving the train forward, the machinist discovered that the train would not move for some strange reason. No matter what they did, the train would not budge an inch as if nailed down by an invisible force.

After some time the passengers who knew Bhagavan understood what was going on and immediately recommended the conductor to invite Nityananda back onto the train.

Running out of all other options and having a train load of people to deliver to the next station, the conductor gave in and invited the holly yogi back on the train.

And as soon as Nityananda climbed back, the train shivered back to life and started to chug along towards its next stop on the route.

# # #

The third story is the most lyrical of all and it’s an eye-witness story.

One dark night Bhagavan was drinking his cup of coffee sitting on the low wall in the back of his hut.

His back was turned to the jungle. While they were watching their master in awe as most disciples do whenever they get the chance (another name for “guru watching” is called “satsang” and is supposed to bestow numerous benefits on a disciple even if nobody talks anything) they noticed a huge tiger approaching Bhagavan from the jungle.

Since they were seeing the ferocious animal but Bhagavan, who was sitting with his back to the dark forest, could not, they grew very apprehensive.

Some of them tried to “warn” the great yogi about the “impending disaster” but Nityananda very calmly continued to sip his coffee (his favorite drink).

And when the tiger reached Nityananda, he stood up on his rear legs and placed his massive paws on the Bhagavan’s shoulders and just stood there, as if listening to the heart beat of the great illuminated master. After staying in that position for a while, the tiger quietly returned to the jungle.

His disciples interpreted this experience as the need for the tiger to get the Master’s “darshan,” or blessings. In India, such animals which manage to get the blessings of a great yogi like Bhagavan Nityananda are believed to be destined to reborn in their next life as a human being and that represents a great advancement on the ladder of spiritual evolution in the yogic tradition.

Blogging To The Bank - Is Blogging Your Key To Making Money Online?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I am going to bet that you are not one of the richest people in the world. As a matter of fact, you are probably an average guy or gal who works 40+ hours a week (making money for someone else) and when all the bills are paid, you have very little left to show for it. How do I know this? This describes just about everyone who starts trying to make money online. Therefore, it goes without saying that you would probably be very excited if you had a way to start cashing in without any money down and with no start-up costs. One way to start doing exactly this is to start writing a blog.

Why Blogging Is A Good Idea

Writing a blog is one of the best ways you can get started making money online because you get two things that are very important in my opinion.

  1. You get an outlet for posting affiliate links on the web without resorting to Pay Per Click campaigns, which can become very costly, very quickly.
  2. Blogs are easier to create than webpages because you don’t have to bother with or learn HTML.

The best part about blogging is that there are so many blog sites out there that are free for anyone to use. In the same way that GeoCities gives out free webpages, there are many sites that are turning to giving out free blogs, such as Blogger.com. Using these free blogging services, you could easily have 40-50 money making pages for free.

Why Blogs Get More Traffic

One of the most difficult parts of making money online is actually getting people to visit your website. Lots of people have tried and failed but never learned how to get traffic to their website. The secret is actually very simple. You need to get listed in the search engines. The problem is that most search engines will favor listing you more if they find you on their own. So it quickly becomes a chicken vs. the egg situation. You need to get the search engines to visit you, but you can’t submit to them because of the potential penalties. The great thing about blogging sites is that they are already being crawled by the search engines so you will automatically get listed. Blogs using RSS feeds can be listed even quicker in most cases.

Your First Money Stream

One way to make money with blogs is to sign up for Google Adsense. This is a block of advertisements that you show for Google and they pay you every time someone clicks on one of the ads. The best part about this is that it often monetizes the visitors that weren’t going to buy anything through your site anyway.

The Power Of Reviews

One of the more popular ways to start earning a paycheck is to promote affiliate products. It is a well-known fact that products on the internet sell better not through advertisements, but by reviews and word of mouth. Just think back to the last time you bought a book from Amazon. Did you buy it because it had good reviews? You sure did. The nice thing about blogs is that they are all just opinions posted by ordinary people, and because of this, blogs can be an incredible selling machine just waiting to be released.

What Should You Write About?

I often get asked what is the best topic to write about in a blog. The answer is simple. You should only write about topics that you know something about, otherwise people will detect that you are not being sincere. Pick a topic that you know lots about, and start writing a little bit each day about your topic. The best format could be anything, but think about teaching something to your readers. Make your blog a series of lessons, presented one per day or one per week. This will keep your visitors coming back every, and every time they come back you’ve got another opportunity to make a sale to them.

An Army Of One

Have you ever heard the phrase “There’s power in numbers”? This is especially true for making money online. Most successful online marketers know that when you strike upon an idea that makes you $20 per day, if you do that idea 20 times, you should now be making $400 dollars per day. Therefore it goes without saying that if you have one blog that makes you money, you should make more of them. However, there is a certain way to do this successfully, and if you do it wrong your your blog will get banned by either the blogging site, or worse, by the search engines.

Rob Benwell’s Blogging to the Bank eBook shows you how to do it the right way which will save you the time, money and frustration of trying to figure it out on your own. I’ve got additional information on this eBook on my main website, listed below.

Your Possibilities Are Endless

Overall, there are many ways that you could make money on the internet, but many of them will take more time, energy and money than the average person has to spend on them. Blogs are definitely one of the newest and most effective ways to earn you some cash without taking more from you than it provides. Hopefully, I’ve opened your eyes to an easier, cheaper way for making money online.

Mark Mann has taken affiliate marketing to the max and is working from home on the strength of his 20+ websites. He is now showing the world his top ten list for making money online.

Among his many accomplishments are his eBook downloads site at http://www.cometdeals.com and his new information repository at http://www.factarea.com.
