Isolating with AA

Monday, March 8th, 2010

You’re playing poker online. You get AA and you think, hmm, I better get some money out of this. So you decide to slow play it and you end up getting them busted by a two pair connected set you let limp in.

So let’s talk about isolating with high pocket pairs like AA and KK. You’ll want to raise the max most of the time in your standard raising with AA or KK. If you normally bet 3 or 4 big blinds, bet 5 or 6 to keep from limpers calling. If you get into a raised pot. Skip the 3 betting then four betting, just go ahead and 5bet a stack.

Again , this will keep the limpers from getting in and sucking out on your high pair. Since a hand like KQ suited is stronger on the flop when KQ10 hits than AA. So your goal is to isolate an online poker player, one player, as these hands do better in a heads up pot than they do in a multiway pot. Hands you’d like to play in a multiway pot are suited connectors like KQ or JT suited, but with AA-QQ, you want isolation factor.

If you do get a call after your reraise or initial raise, you’re going to be coming out betting hard on the flop. You want a weaker pair to fold. Yeah, you can extract value, but it’s much safer and +EV to take down the pot right there, and if he wants to call you down, then keep putting on the pressure. Do this with AA or KK and you’ll win a lot more than you’ll get busted by slowplaying them when you’re playing online poker.

Setting Successful Traps

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Any poker online player, pretty much regardless of how long he or she has been at it, has been in the situation where you flop a monster and you aren’t sure what way is the best to get paid the most. A lot of players tend to autopilot toward slowplay mode, where they try to feign weakness early on only to come out of the bag later with a raise or reraise, making it apparent, especially if they are generally tight, that they have flopped a hand that has little fear of losing.

Other players will tend to bet out immediately with their big hands, scaring off their opponents before there is any chance of them thinking they are good or that they can get away with bluffing.

The key to setting good traps in online poker is knowing what your opponent’s tendencies are. If they are the kind that bet when checked to, slowplaying tends to work, but you certainly don’t want to develop a predictable pattern. You should look at your session as a series of instances, and vary accordingly, both mixing in styles and reactions to your casino online opponents’ styles to result in a maze that they will get lost in, and hand you their money in the process.

Setting off Thai Lantern

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Khoom Fay are established Thai lantern, made from fine weave paper with a bamboo skeleton. A flaming pod connected to the lantern provides hot airThe graciously ascend, and produce a extraordinary spectacle, peculiarly when released at constant time intervals to form a string of sparks rising into the sky. Night or day they actually make an impact. Night releases seem more suited to the classic white lanterns whilst Colour imparts itself nicely to Thai Lanterns liberated in the day individual view of course but i do pride myself on being 100% all of the time.Without tearing the paper cautiously take out the Lantern. Ensure the lantern is not crumpled or hanging sideways and that it is full extensive.. This is greatest complete by holding the top of the lantern, softly lifting it a couple of feet, then dropping it acutely. The unit will blow up due to air pressure.Hold the lantern upright, and have a helper light the wick. After a few seconds the lantern will feel lighter, then step by step rise. Do not try to throw it up into the air – just lead it and let it go by itself. Then stand back and savor.Experienced pyrotechnic operators are whom these lanterns are thought for. Wear fire retardant clothing and mitts, and have a pail of H2O accessible.

A Refresher on Pot Odds

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

We’re going to talk about different poker situations in which you’ll have to have odds to call if you’re on a draw or if you’re on a weaker hand and have the opportunity to improve to a winning hand. We call this concept pot odds. Essentially you take the money in the pot and you evaluate what you have to wager to get to a better hand. First, the openended straight. You have 8 outs to improve to a straight. So you take the numbers 5 cards out of the deck. Giving you 8/47 to improve to the straight. For simplicity sake, we’ll round out to about 8/45. Which gives you about 20% chance of completing. So in order to justify a call, you need odds of 1:5 to call and chase your straight. If there’s 100 in the pot, you need to only have to call 20 to make this a profitable chase for this jeux de casino. Next is the the open ended straight with a flush draw. You have your 8 outs, and you add your flush cards. Assuming two are in your hand and two are on the flop, you have 9 possible flush cards, but you can’t recount your straight cards, so you have 7 more outs. Making this 15 outs. 15/47, or essentially 33%. So you can justify a profitable call if there’s 100 in the pot and you have to call 33 dollars. But here’s a little poker trick you may not have thought of. A lot of the time, you can semibluff to improve your odds. Say you’re openended after the flop either in position or out of position and it’s on you to bet, you can bet out half the pot or more to draw your opponent in to either call, or fold, or reraise you, which gives you better odds to call his reraise. This is best done with the flush and straight draw, but everyonce in a while you can get away with it on a low board with just an open ended straight draw when the flop is rainbow.

Playing Online against People You Play with Live

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I have been playing some private poker tournaments against people who I play with at a weekly home-game and monthly poker online game. We play a $20 rebuy and add-on game live, but for fun, we also play a $5 freezeout online. I have been playing these players live for years, and I have been playing online poker against random people for years as well. I can’t help but notice a difference playing online against people that I know and just random opponents though.

Firstly, I feel that I can never get away with button and late poker position raises against players that know me. In a regular sit and go or small tournament, people play pretty tight and don’t take many chances. In the private online game, these people tend to play the player more than they employ “winning strategy” and bigger pots erupt early. If I make these raises, I am almost sure to get played back at preflop. In most online tournaments, people are not going to re-raise you with garbage, they generally only do this with hands.

With people you know, it all of a sudden turns into a bluffing match. People want to outplay each other, even if it means outlandish play. Of course a little bit of this is probably due to the tiny buy-in compared to what we play with live. $5 isn’t that much to win or lose, so it might not get people to bring their A-game. It’s a more recreational feel, which certainly matches the cheap buy-in.

So, does what I know about these players live translate to playing against them online? I’ve found this, generally, not to be the case. When someone who I know live is a very loose player, I end up trying to be more aggressive with weaker hands than I normally would be online. The fact that I know them makes me change my game, instead of try and use proven online poker strategy to win. Most of the time even these loose live players have good hand selection online; this often leads me into overplaying hands like AJ into bigger hands that I am not willing to give them credit for.

Bottom line: try to treat people you know like everyone else. It’s good to be able to adapt to players and styles, but you shouldn’t force your preconceptions into a new game.

Pay Attention: Aggression

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Paying attention to what’s going on around you is an essential habit for any poker player with arguably the exception of an online poker player. You know that every time you sit out a hand at the casino, take stock of what your opponents are doing. Knowing what your fellow players are up to is one of the things that separates winners from losers. This technique can be lost playing poker online. But what exactly should you be looking for when you watch your opponents? Here are a few things to pay attention to at the table.

If you take stock of how your opponents play against each other, you’ll be able to predict how they will play against you. Better yet, when you know how aggressive they are, you’ll be able to predict more accurately what hands they are holding based on their actions.

Take inventory of how aggressive all of your opponents are. Find out who is likely to raise you on a given hand, and who will be more likely to fold. Also, try to figure out what cards they’ll play aggressively. Will Player A raise with just an Ace high? Does Player B only raise with the nuts?

Once you have a handle on what cards your opponents like to play and how they tend to play them, you’re a huge step closer to winning the game.
