Botulinum therapy (shortened to BoTox) is now popular in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an important part of grooming for people in the city.
Still I never cease to be surprised when I hear the various stories that have been heard around the simple procedure. I have listed below a selection of the more popular errors frequently encountered at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Fallacy no. 1: I could lose the ability to express emotions!
The human face has approximately 60 muscles. These muscles usually work in harmony, but over time lines can appear. When too much BoTox has been injected the muscles of expression may become over relaxed. The dosage injected by most physicians will result in you appearing well rested, yet you will remain every bit as animated.

Indeed the proper quantity of BoTox in the appropriate place means an expressive face is retained whilst the wrinkles are reduced.
Fallacy no. 2: BoTox is toxic!
There is a little truth in this argument. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the proper medical terminology. Too great a dose may loosen muscles that you do not want relaxed and even may make one extremely ill.
Chemists have a well-known phrase that states ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. Any drug in a big enough dose can make you unwell. If you drink too much water you will die.
Fallacy no. 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
In our practice Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician utilises a needle finer than human hair. Some people liken the treatments to a bug bite. Certainly not as painful as having a regular shot.
Fallacy no. 4: I might lose feeling in my face!
Totally untrue. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. BoTox only impacts on the relaxation of muscular tissues.
Fallacy no. 5. You cannot stop having BoTox otherwise you might age quicker than ever!
This is also false.
A treatment will last around 3 months. Further injections do last a few weeks more. Eventually as muscle strength builds up again the lines will slowly reform. Even So your lines certainly will not be more pronounced than when you began your treatment.
In fact the lines should be be softer than if you hadn’t undergone BoTox – even if you don’t persevere with the injections. This, of course is primarily so because you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
